How do I configure AirPrint on iOS devices?
AirPrint is a convenient feature exclusive to Apple devices, enabling users to print high-quality output without the hassle of downloading and installing printer-specific drivers. With AirPrint, you can wirelessly print photos and documents directly from your iOS devices to any AirPrint-enabled printer connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
In enterprise settings, IT administrators have the capability to remotely add AirPrint printers to the printer list on iOS devices. WeGuard simplifies this process by allowing admins to pre-configure AirPrint settings on deployed iOS devices, eliminating the need for manual configuration on each device. This streamlined approach enhances efficiency and ensures seamless printing capabilities across the organization.
Pre-requisites
- Apple devices running on iOS 7 and higher
- Make sure that your printer supports AirPrint. You can find the list of supported printers in the list of AirPrint-enabled printers
- Make sure the device and the printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Procedure to Configure an AirPrinter from the WeGuard Enterprise Portal
TLS: Check this option to enable Transport Layer Security (TLS) to encrypt data when sent to the printer. This feature is available only on devices running iOS 11 and above.
Obtain the server IP address, port number, printer name, and resource path.
- Connect a Mac to the local network where the AirPrint printer is located.
- Open the Terminal app (located in the /Applications/Utilities folder).
- In Terminal, enter ippfind, then press Return.
This command shows printer information such as the following:
ipp://myprinter.local.:631/ipp/print
- In this example, myprinter.local is the name of a printer, and /ipp/print is its resource path.
- To get the IP address, enter the following command:
ping myprinter.local (replace myprinter.local with the name of your printer).
Note the IP address information returned by the command in the format:
ping myprinter.local (192.168.0.1)
In this case, the IP address of the printer is 192.168.0.1, the port is 631, the printer name is myprinter.local, and the resource path is /ipp/print.
Note: These steps will only work on MacBooks.
How to print from your iOS device from AirPrint:
-
Select Application: Open the application from which you want to print on your iOS device.
-
Access the Print Option: Look for the print option within the application. If you can't locate it, consult the app's user guide, as not all applications support AirPrint.
-
Select Printer: Tap on "Select Printer," and you should see the name of the AirPrint-enabled printer listed. Choose the printer you want to use by tapping on its name.
-
Specify Copies and Pages: Provide the number of copies you need. If you're printing a document, you may also need to specify the number of pages to be printed.
Initiate Printing: Once you've configured the printing options, tap on "Print" to initiate the printing process. The selected image or document will be sent to the printer wirelessly via AirPrint.
Result: AirPrint configurations and printing from an iOS device are achieved.
