Device Security Features - How to restrict mobile user from accessing applications?

Hello and Welcome to WeGuard Enterprise Visual Knowledge-base Series.
In this KB article, We will explain how to restrict mobile users from accessing applications.

One more security feature added to the wings of the WeGuard® platform. "Prevent app usage" is a security feature where an admin can restrict device users from accessing specific applications. This feature comes in handy for securing business data stored on the devices. There can be cases where, as per business requirements, an application will be installed on managed devices, but the organization does not want its users to access it directly. At the same time, its instance is used in some other applications. For example, in a workflow application, mobile users would need to capture pictures for reference while performing a task. But as per the organization's policy, users are not allowed to access camera applications directly.
Prerequisite: Work managed policy is selected during account sign-up.

Now's let us see how to enable the prevention of app usage at the policy level.
  • Login to WeGuard Console with valid credentials.
  • From the left menu, click on Policy Groups.
  • Notice the list of policy groups. Click on any work managed policy.

  • In the policy tab, go to the security section.

  • Scroll down to find "ENABLE PREVENT APP USAGE."
  • By default the toggle button is OFF.

  • To restrict users from accessing specific applications, enable the option by clicking on the toggle button.
  • Provide App Name & App Package ID to restrict access. For example, to block camera application enter,
    • App Name: Camera
    • Package Id: com.android.camera

  • To add multiple applications click on "+" that is placed right beside Package Id field.
  • Save the policy by clicking on "Save and Continue."

  • Once the devices get the latest policy, users will not be able to access the application added to prevent the app usage list.
  • As per the above example, device users will not access the camera application on the device.
  • Additionally they will not be able to use Facebook and Playstore applications as well.
  • When the device user clicks on the app, an access denied message would show up as below.
